Background

The cost of living is increasing nationwide in Canada due to increase in inflation. This costs includes the basic necessities like housing, groceries, healthcare, transportation and communication. With minimum wages and low availability of jobs, it becomes more challenging for people to cover their basic living expenses. This especially has more impact on the students. With high tuition fees, an ongoing housing crisis, increased fuel prices and higher grocery bills, surviving becomes difficult for many students.

Challenge

To analyze patterns and trends of the factors causing an increase in the cost of living in Canada, and to create awareness on how it has impacted the lives of students. The data would be presented through an infographic poster in a simplified manner, that will support a better decision making process among the target audiences.

Food and grocery bills

The average amount spent on groceries is $200, which is not adequate. Given the high expense of various meals, such as meat and dairy, many Canadians opt for junk food, which does lead to eating out. However, even that has become significantly more costly with a rise in grocery costs (spring, 2023).

Housing

A worldwide housing crisis is being fueled by a scarcity of affordable homes that may be purchased or rented. Mortgage Broker News reports that during 2015, housing costs have increased 41.9% more quickly than salaries. As a result of increased housing costs, people are spending less on other basic needs like groceries, bills, transportation, and health.

High tuition fees

In Canada, undergraduate domestic students spent an average of $6,872 in tuition, while international students paid $35,836 (Global news, 2023). International students pay three times more than the domestic students, which adds to their living costs and sometimes educational debt.
